Today, the Surgeon General of the United States, Dr. Vivek Murthy, called for the addition of warning labels to social media platforms advising the public that their use could harm the mental health of adolescents.
“Dr. Murthy’s courageous call to warn parents and youth about the potential harms posed by social media platforms is a crucial step toward safeguarding the health and well-being of our nation’s children,” said Kris Perry, Executive Director, Children and Screens: Institute of Digital Media and Child Development. “With his ongoing calls to action, combined with increased bipartisan momentum in Congress and public support for children’s online safety, I am hopeful that social media platforms will have to take steps to protect children online.”
